In April 1963 the Maria Isabel was taken over by Mexican hotel magnate Cesar Balsa's Balsa Hotels. It was designed by renowned Mexican architect Juan Sordo Madaleno, working with architects José Villagrán García, Ricardo Legorreta, and José Adolfo Wiechers.
